Hi, I’m Zainab!

You can call me “Zee”

This is a story of how I turned from a worried mom into a food entrepreneur on a mission.

ZeeKitchen was born out of coincidence. It’s a by-product of my fight for my son’s well-being.

My firstborn started having severe stomach problems at the age of ten. He had stomach cramps and often started vomiting in the middle of the night.

After months of sickness and endless exams later, my son was finally diagnosed with a chronic immune system disease (eosinophilic esophagitis) in which a type of white blood cell (eosinophil) builds up in the lining of the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach (esophagus). This buildup, which is a reaction to foods, allergens or acid reflux, can inflame or injure the esophageal tissue. He was prescribed with medication containing cortisone.

Our life started slowly getting back to normal. We were all exhausted from worry and restless nights, and I was relieved to see the medication started to work.

But it was time for another worry to awake.

After a while I noticed my son changing. He was always tired, grumpy, and even his beloved football hobby didn’t interest him anymore.

I learned cortisone treatment can have many other side effects such as slowing down growth and weakening the bones.

I said to myself: There must be another solution.

My son needed his medication, I knew it. However, I was worried about the impact on his health over the long term.

I started noting down everything he ate and all his symptoms. Soon I realized that the tummy problems always came after eating processed food such as store-bought sandwiches, crisps, hamburgers.

No one had spoken to us about the role of nutrition.

At the same time, I did a lot of research on stomach symptoms and different diets. Thanks to my work in a pharmaceutical company, I had the chance to closely follow the development of research focused on gut health and gut microbiota.

I learned about the irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease as well as about the low FODMAP diet. We decided to try it.

The diet started working. The symptoms disappeared and my son’s doctor agreed to lower his medication dose.

At the end, he only needed a third of what he had started with.

Gut-healthy food helped him get his usual good spirit back, and my mind was truckloads lighter.

Then a new question arose.

Could I help others too, with everything I had learned?

My research and my work taught me a lot about this new field of research: gut microbiota, gut health, probiotics, prebiotics, and fermented foods.

It opened my eyes to the fact that improving our gut health can positively influence other parts of our health and life, too.

But why bone broth?

There are countless ways to promote a gut-healthy diet. Fermented products include a lot of good bacteria, as do many milk products and vegetables, alongside bone broth and kombucha.

Since the launch of ZeeKitchen, bone broth remains our flagship product for both practical and personal reasons.

In our family, it has been one of the easiest ways to include more gut-friendly food in my son’s diet. He loves to drink it, he loves soups based on it, he wants me to cook his rice in broth.

This has changed the way our whole family eats. We’ve eliminated all processed foods and replaced them with home-cooked, gut-friendly meals.

But there is also a deeper meaning.

I live in Switzerland now, but I was born and grew up in Western Africa and originally from the cattle rearing Fulani ethnic that lives a nomad lifestyle.

Bone broth was my grandma’s special cure to everything. Someone is sick? Let’s boil some bones!

I’m not in any way against modern medicine. Having powerful treatments doesn’t exclude the role of nutrition and the solutions that nature offers us to feel good. Eating in a way that improves our health is also a step back in time, towards the holistic approach our ancestors had towards food.

My mission is to combine our ancestors’ wisdom to our current lifestyle so that a happier, healthier life is at the reach of everyone.
